Workshop “From Waste to Resource: Innovative Approaches to Material Recovery and Sustainable Waste Management”

A recent workshop organised by ISWA brought together four EU-funded projects — RECLAIM, Wood2Wood, GRINNER, and EcoReFibre — to share their latest innovations in sustainable waste management. Titled “From Waste to Resource,” the event showcased projects tackling different waste streams, including electronic waste, plastics, and wood.

Highlights included AI and robotics for e-waste recycling (GRINNER), wood upcycling (Wood2Wood), wood waste recycling into building products (EcoReFibre), and a portable robotic material recovery system (RECLAIM).

The workshop emphasised the importance of collaboration to maximise the impact of these innovations and support Europe’s transition to a circular economy. Key partners involved include FORTH, AIMPLAS, KU Leuven, and others

EcoReFibre at Ecomondo 2023

20 November 2023 – Rimini, Italy
At Ecomondo 2023, the key European event dedicated to the green and circular economy, FederlegnoArredo presented the brochure “The Added Value of Sustainability”. The publication outlines the wood-furniture sector’s sustainability strategy, available tools, and active projects supporting the ecological transition. Among the projects featured is ECOREFIBRE, co-funded by the European Commission’s Horizon programme. A summary of its initial results is included in the brochure. Ecomondo serves as a major meeting point for industrial groups, stakeholders, policy makers, opinion leaders, local authorities, research bodies, and institutions, who gather to define strategies for EU environmental policy development.

Looking ahead, the Wood4Bauhaus Alliance plans to launch pilot demonstrations, policy dialogues, and expanded trade-union engagement to mainstream circular wood-panel production across Europe.

World Conference on Timber Engeneering (WCTE)

Oslo, June 2023 – The Wood4Bauhaus Alliance took the spotlight at the WCTE 2023, where Uwe Kies, Secretary General of InnovaWood, delivered a keynote speech on timber’s role in sustainable construction.

Kies highlighted the Alliance’s support for the New European Bauhaus (NEB), which combines sustainability, beauty, and inclusion in design. He stressed that wood, as a natural and renewable material, can help cut carbon emissions, store carbon long-term, and support circular construction.

Under the theme Timber for a Livable Future”, WCTE 2023 gathered over 1,200 experts from around the world. Kies called for stronger EU policies, more funding, and better education and training to help scale up the use of wood in construction.

The Wood4Bauhaus Alliance continues to connect science, industry, and policy, promoting timber as a key part of Europe’s move towards climate-friendly, resilient, and beautiful living spaces.
