Wood4Bauhaus Alliance advances
Circular Economy Goals at EWPS 2022

Hamburg, 2022 – At the European Wood-based Panel Symposium (EWPS), researchers and industry stakeholders presented a contribution titled “Towards EU Green Deal and Circular Economy goals through an innovative research, industry and trade union partnership: the Wood4Bauhaus Alliance.” This work delves into the Alliance’s mission: fostering collaboration across sectors to accelerate sustainable wood-based solutions.

The Wood4Bauhaus Alliance brings together expertise from academia, manufacturers, and labour unions, uniting them under a shared vision.
With objectives aligned to the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP), the partnership aims to integrate circularity
principles, such as waste minimisation, resource efficiency, and social engagement, into wood panel production and application methods.

At EWPS, the Alliance shared key findings and policy‑oriented guidance drawn from years of collaboration. The presentation highlighted:
• Development of zero-waste recommendations tailored to the wood-panel sector
• Strategies for embedding sustainability in product design, manufacturing, and end‑of‑life practices

The session also referenced ongoing efforts under the EcoReFibre project, which develops innovative sorting, defibering, and processing technologies to reuse fibres from post-consumer wood for new panel production, supporting the transition to a more circular wood-based industry.

The work also outlined recommendations for Horizon Europe’s future funding framework (FP10), emphasising the need to support cross-sector partnerships that scale up circular bioeconomy efforts.

Looking ahead, the Wood4Bauhaus Alliance plans to launch pilot demonstrations, policy dialogues, and expanded trade union engagement to mainstream circular wood panel production across Europe.
