
Extraction of wood fibres and fines from post-consumer fibreboard
With the resource collected and the material sorted, EcoReFibre moves to the next step: recovering fibres and fines that can serve as secondary raw materials for new products. This Results in Brief presents the wet and dry processing routes used to extract fibres and fines respectively from post-consumer fibreboard. Developed by Dieffenbacher, both technologies reached TRL 6 in the project demonstration. The wet process treated more than 25 tonnes of post-consumer fibreboard chips and produced clean fibres suitable for new fibreboard, with quality comparable to virgin fibres.
The dry process handled more than 22 tonnes of post-consumer fibreboard chips in a continuous process. It produced fines with the required particle size distribution for particleboard applications, while also separating coatings into a dedicated stream. This Results in Brief moves the story from sorting to material recovery, showing how separated wood waste can be transformed into valuable secondary raw materials and brought back into circulation for new panel production and other applications. In parallel, EcoReFibre also explored a second defibration route for recovered wood which will be described in the next article.
