
Defibration of solid wood waste and post-consumer fibreboards: the mTMP process
How can post-consumer fibreboard can be converted into fibres suitable for use in new products?
In parallel with the work carried out by Dieffenbacher, a second route was developed to turn wood waste into a secondary raw material. The mTMP process, a moisture modifying thermo-mechanical pulping technology developed by IHD defibrates post-consumer solid wood and post-consumer fibreboards for new fibreboard and other applications.
During EcoReFibre, the mTMP process advanced from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 to TRL 6. It produced high-quality fibres with infeed containing up to 25% recycled post-consumer fibreboard or solid wood waste. Further development is focusing on fibre quality, processing speed and industrial scale up. Ongoing research also looks at improved fibre saturation and at chemical properties, to better understand their effects on emissions and bonding performance.
The new Results in brief and Factsheet demonstrate how different technological routes are being developed to recover fibres from wood waste and keep more material in circulation. The next publication of the series will show how these recovered fibres can be used to manufacture new fibreboards.
