
Recycling post-consumer fibres from wood waste into new fibreboards
Recovered fibres are returning to production in new MDF and HDF panels.
The project demonstrated that medium and high-density fibreboards (MDF and HDF) made with recycled fibres can achieve performance comparable to reference panels, confirming the value of wood waste as a secondary raw material. The trials were carried out by Sonae Arauco for MDF and by Homanit for HDF.
At lab scale, new panels were produced with 15% and 25% recycled fibres from post-consumer fibreboards. Industrial trials then showed that up to 15% recycled fibres could be incorporated into thin HDF, while trials with post-consumer solid wood showed that panels containing up to 25% recycled fibres could meet requirements with properties comparable to reference boards.
This is where the EcoReFibre approach clearly shows its value. Wood waste is not only sorted and processed, but also turned back into new products that can help reduce dependence on virgin wood and support a more circular fibreboard sector.
The following publication broadens this perspective by showing that recovered fibres can also be used in insulation products.
