Integrating recycled fibreboard fines in the surface layer of particleboard
EcoReFibre returns to the best-known recycling route for recovered wood: particleboard production. While this has long been one of the main material recovery pathways, the project looks at the use of recycled fibreboard fines in the surface layer of particleboard.
The project tested substitution rates of 10%, 20% and 30%, with the industrial trial focusing on 20% to ensure stable production and product performance. The results showed that particleboard with recycled fines achieved performance comparable to reference panels.
The fines used in this demonstration were produced through the dry process developed by Dieffenbacher, linking this step directly to the earlier work on recovering valuable fractions from post-consumer fibreboard.
Within the wider EcoReFibre story, this Results in Brief shows that established recycling routes still play an important role, while the project is broadening the possibilities for how recovered wood can be brought back into use.
