ESTIMATING POST-CONSUMER FIBREBOARD WASTE GENERATION IN EUROPE
Following the publication of the Guide to the EcoReFibre Results in Brief and Factsheets, stage one focuses on prediction modelling.
Led by ESB, it opens the series on estimating post-consumer fibreboard waste in Europe. It addresses a key challenge: understanding when fibreboards become waste and available for recycling.
Today, limited information is available on the lifespan of fibreboards, specifically on medium-density fibreboard (MDF). This makes it harder for recycling actors to plan future material flows. The publication presents an open access interactive tool.
Developed jointly by FCBA and ESB, the tool estimates fibreboard waste volumes up to 2050. It combines production, import and export data with product lifespan and end-use information. This helps predict when fibreboards placed on the market will enter the waste stream. The results support better planning for recycling, investment and policy. They also help define the resource base that EcoReFibre aims to bring back into circulation.
The publication also presents results from a three-year study in France. In the study, fibreboard represented 4.5% by mass of the sampled post-consumer wood waste stream.
