Bringing circular fibreboards closer to industry

On 2 October 2026, EcoReFibre joined industry experts at Biesse for a dedicated workshop. The event focused on new technologies supporting more circular fibreboard production. It addressed a key challenge for the sector: how can recycled fibres and research results become practical solutions for industry?

The workshop brought together research, market and industry perspectives. Franco Bulian from ITS Academy Udine opened the discussion with recent fibreboard developments and market scenarios. Francesco Balducci from Manifaktura then presented EcoReFibre and its approach to fibreboard recycling. He highlighted solutions for recycling post-consumer wood and fibreboard waste. The discussion then moved to circularity and the regulatory context. Omar Degoli from FederlegnoArredo presented material circularity and the evolving ESPR framework. Finally, Roberto Saltarelli from Biesse explored how new fibres can be processed at industrial scale. The workshop included a practical technology demonstration at Biesse. Participants visited the Material Hub and Next Experience. They explored materials, processing solutions and possible industrial applications. Lorenzo Mainardi presented the Material Hub and its role in exploring innovative materials.

The demonstration helped connect research results with real production environments. This link between research and industry is central to EcoReFibre. Technical solutions need industrial validation before they can reach wider market uptake. They require cooperation between researchers, manufacturers, technology providers and sector organisations.

The challenge now is to move from successful demonstrations towards wider industrial uptake. Strong cooperation across the value chain can help make circular fibreboards part of future production.
