Strategic Roadmap: Unlocking circularity and market potential from wood waste
Nearly 47 million tonnes of wood waste were generated in the EU in 2022, yet only around 40% is currently recycled, mostly into particleboard, while about 60% is still used for energy recovery.
Developed under the leadership of European Panel Federation and InnovaWood, with valuable contributions from the EcoReFibre consortium and experts from industry and academia, the Roadmap sets out what is needed to scale circularity in the wood-based panel value chain in Europe, with a focus on fibreboard recycling.
The roadmap contributes to the discussion on circular wood use, showcases current developments and upcoming solutions, and aims to advance wood and fibre recycling and reuse.
It identifies key challenges, drivers and barriers affecting the uptake of secondary raw materials, and outlines pathways to improve resource efficiency and reduce reliance on virgin wood.
By setting out targeted research and policy recommendations, the EcoReFibre Roadmap directly contributes to, and is strongly aligned with, the EU Bioeconomy Strategy and the forthcoming Circular Economy Act.
