Recycling post-consumer fibres from wood waste into new insulation products
Wood fibre insulation boards are used in the building envelope to balance indoor temperatures, reduce energy consumption and improve comfort. EcoReFibre showed that recovered wood fibres can also be used in new insulation products. Using fibres from post-consumer fibreboard and solid wood waste, the project achieved promising results for rigid, flexible and loose fill insulation, opening another route for keeping wood into the loop. Led by Soprema, the strongest results were achieved in flexible insulation boards, where up to 50% fibres from post-consumer fibreboard delivered properties comparable to conventional reference panels, while well sorted solid wood fibres met specifications at even higher shares. For lower density rigid boards, the trials also showed that recycled fibres can perform well under the right conditions.
This publication adds further value to the EcoReFibre story by showing that recovered fibres are not limited to panel production and can also support circular solutions in the building sector.
