Bioblocks: Construction material made from wood fibreboard dust
The EcoReFibre story reaches its most circular point, showing that even fibreboard dust, a by-product, can be turned into a new construction material. The project developed Bioblocks, modular units made from wood fibreboard dust and a fully bio-based adhesive based on citric acid and sorbitol. The concept progressed from small lab prototypes to full scale blocks. Pilot scale production used blends of post-consumer fibreboard fine particles and dust, and the tests showed strong compressive strength, moisture resistance, and promising thermal and acoustic performance. The material can also be reused or recycled into new blocks multiple times, supporting circular use. In this way, the project shows that circularity is not only about recovering fibres and fines for new products, but also about ensuring that even by-products can remain in the material loop for as long as possible.
