EcoReFibre develops smart sorting and processing technologies to recycle post-consumer fibreboard back into fibreboards and novel building products, closing the material loop and reducing dependence on virgin wood.

Combining AI-enabled sorting and advanced fibre-recovery methods, EcoReFibre works with industry leaders through five pilot projects to demonstrate circularity at scale, aiming to replace up to 25% of virgin fibres in Europe’s fibreboard industry.

Develop and prove a range of commercially viable methods for recycling.

Direct the post-consumer waste streams back to the production sites.

Promote a sustainable use of natural resources.

Increase the industry’s resilience in the context of international raw material markets.

Fibreboard recycling on an industrial scale

After years of research, fibreboard recycling is now being scaled up to full industrial level. EcoReFibre plays a key role in this transition by developing and demonstrating advanced fibre-recovery methods and AI-supported sorting for post-consumer fibreboard. The project also delivers the first interactive model of fibreboard waste volumes in Europe, predicting data from 1995 to 2050. Together, these innovations drive circularity and resource efficiency across the wood-based panels industry.

EcoReFibre promotes a circular economy by turning wood waste into fibreboards and innovative building products, uniting key actors across the European fibreboard value chain.

New study explores recycling of post-consumer fibreboards for sustainable MDF production

New study explores recycling of post-consumer fibreboards for sustainable MDF production Research by Percy Alao focuses on the recycling of post-consumer medium-density fiberboard (MDF) waste using advanced methods like thermomechanical pulping (TMP) and impact reactor processing. The study highlights how recycling affects fiber properties critical to MDF quality.Using Dynamic Image Analysis, the research shows that...

WoodPoP 2nd high level meeting

Helsinki, 4 October 2024 – The Second High-Level Meeting of the European Wood Policy Platform (woodPoP) involved 80 experts from 19 European countries, along with representatives from the European Commission and 22 organisations from academia, industry, and regional networks. The event brought new energy to efforts for promoting the sustainable and innovative use of wood...

Researchers and Industry Collaboration in the Development of Recycled Fibreboards

Project communication partners, the InnovaWood team, visited the sites to discover the science behind research: At the Swedish University of Agriculture Science (SLU), in cooperation with private companies, the recycled wood fibres are characterized and pressed into boards which then undergo mechanical and various other tests.  ...
